The Langley community showed strong support for a variety show concert on Feb. 12, put together to raise funds for the victims of the recent floods in the Philippines.

More than $4,000 was raised in just over two hours of entertainment and fun that showcased Philippino culture and art.

On Dec. 17, 2011, a horrific flash flood in the northern part of Mindanao in the Philippines struck before midnight and wiped out entire villages along its path.

"The result was devastating creating thousands of people dead or missing and rendering 75,000 people homeless," explained Dong Edmilao, a Langley man who was one of the organizers of the concert.

Fundraising efforts in St. Joseph Parish were underway almost immediately after Christmas, with a bake sale, pancake breakfast culminating with the benefit concert last Sunday.

" There was no shortage of talents among the performers in the benefit show. St. Catherine's School kids sang, danced and played instruments wonderfully," he ntoed. "Professional singers and entertainers like Ryan McAllister and Patrick Masse donated their singing voices to the fundraiser concert. The local Rejoice Choir and Dance Troupe led by Malou Sablada wowed the audience with their singing and dancing. Many others generously gave of themselves and their talents and abilities."

The event included members of the local Filipino community with the organizers, led by Dr. Brendan Martin and the Development and Peace Committee.

The funds raised will help the flood victims and Edmilao praised the community "for this wonderful show of kindness, compassion and humanity towards people they don't even know."
