From safe car seats to DNA kits, Safer Communities Day is about kids and keeping them protected in Langley.
Children will be having so much fun riding their bikes, eating hot dogs, and meeting police officers and firefighters on Saturday, Aug. 21 that they may not even realize their parents and the community are taking measures to keep them safe.
The fifth annual Safer Communities Day is being presented by the Township of Langley, Langley RCMP, and Recreation Excellence at the George Preston Recreation Centre at 20699 42 Ave.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., youngsters are encouraged to bring their bikes and helmets and take part in a number of activities with their families and friends.
"This is a chance for kids to come out and enjoy themselves while learning some valuable lessons," said Township of Langley parks and rec programmer Barbara Jeffery. "Parents, too, will benefit from the day, which will provide them with information about how to keep their children out of harm's way."
During Safer Communities Day, youngsters can participate in a bike obstacle course, have a free hot dog lunch supplied by the Langley Lions, and enter to win a bike prize donated by Cranky's Bike Shop in Aldergrove.
For parents, BCAA will offer child seat inspections and the Langley RCMP will provide identity theft and child DNA kits. ICBC will bring in vision goggles, and volunteers from Block Watch and members of the Township of Langley fire department will also be on hand.
