Food bank: Bands help food bank

Musicians plan to chew up the joint in Aldergrove.

An all ages show Aug. 21 in Aldergrove will help fill the shelves of the Langley Food Bank outlet in Aldergrove.

It didn’t start out with such a big scope. Initially 24-year-old musician Dwayne Morgan just wanted a place to play for him and a few other bands.

“It started with me just wanting to play a show somewhere. I’ve been doing the occasional open mic since [his former band] Radiokill split, but that didn’t curb the urge to play at all,” he said.

During the planning for the show at the Kinsmen Community Centre, it evolved into a full-on fundraiser.

“The food bank was chosen because I remembered reading an article – in the Advance, maybe? – about how the food bank wasn’t doing so well around Christmas last year,” Morgan said. “Everyone’s gotta eat.”

His current project is Vibe (which by the way is on the hunt for a male or female lead vocalist, if anyone out there is interested). In addition to Vibe, the show will feature the Joel Brown Band, Joyride, and Great Apes.

“I decided I was going to put on a show in Aldergrove, and invite some of the bands I know to come out and play [I play rhythm guitar and sing in Vibes],” he explained. “I don’t like doing the whole money talk, so we had a forum online with all the band members and figured we should make it a charity.”

It’s an all ages gig but people have to get tickets in advance due to venue restrictions.

Tickets, $10 and in advance only, can be requested at www.myspace.com/aldyvibes. The doors open at 6 p.m.

The event isn’t set up to accept food donations but will accept cash contributions for the food bank.

“I don’t have any plans to accept food at the door. If anyone wants to make a donation, I think the best way to go is to donate some money,” Morgan said.

Then the food bank can use the funds to purchase what its clients need and can make the funds stretch farther, he explained.

“Giving options is a good way to go, I think,” he said.

As the planning progresses, more people are supporting the effort by area musicians.

“We have a few companies on board already,” he said.

Any other companies that are interested in helping this effort can email Morgan at vibesmusic@live.com. If all goes well with this first show, expect more such musical showcases in the future.

“I would like to do this again if it all goes smoothly and according to plan – Christmas time maybe?” he said. “The plan, by the way, is to have a night that supports local talent, helps out members of the community, and gives us all something to do on a Saturday night.”
