For more than a decade, the Langley Advance has been asking readers to tell us which are the best businesses in town - which restaurant has the tastiest food and friendliest servers, which tire shop will get you back on the road fastest, which book store has the best selection.
While we try to celebrate as many of these efforts as we can in the pages of the Langley Advance, the Best of the Best gives us the opportunity to shine a light on a broad swathe of enterprises.
Our categories are numerous, and seem to grow every year. Langley is a growing community, served by a growing number of businesses. This is nice for Langley residents who like to shop close to home and support local jobs. It wasn't all that long ago that a big shopping trip meant a trip to Surrey or even Vancouver for Langley residents. The growth of the local business districts in Willowbrook, Walnut Grove, Aldergrove, Willoughby, and other neighbourhoods is a sign that our community is becoming a hub of the Lower Mainland, not just a suburb to bigger towns.
Beyond variety, we have one of the most community-minded business populations in the Lower Mainland. From the always-busy Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce to the numerous youth team sponsors, to the hundreds of charity fundraisers and donations, it would be hard to get anything done in Langley without the support of smalland medium-sized businesses here.
Most important in this effort is the help of the residents of Langley.
It's the customers of those businesses chosen as the Best of the Best that make the decisions, by voting each year. This year, social media made an impression on some of the campaigns, with calls for support going out to customers through Facebook and Twitter.
We hope this annual effort lets our readers know about the many diverse businesses right here in Langley.
