Hayley Nimmo has every right to be tired as the mother of two young boys, including one special needs child.
As well, she created and ran the Families in Touch (FIT) Network to help families with special needs children connect, share, and learn from and with each other.
So when she saw a contest in which the grand prize was a $3,000 bedroom makeover, she started dreaming of what it would mean to her family.
"We are a one-income family - as such we never feel that we have the money to spend on ourselves, especially for bedroom furniture," Hayley said of her and husband Mike in their application letter for the contest.
Her eldest child, Beckem, is one of about 60 known cases worldwide of a rare genetic disorder. He cannot speak, wears a body cast, needs a wheelchair, and must be fed by tube.
With so much on her plate, things such as decorating take a backseat to the pace of day-to-day life.
"I would love to have a place I can escape to and lie down for five minutes and walk out feeling like I have the strength to live this life well," she said.
The Nimmo family won the makeover, organized by The Passionate Home and McBurney Junction Interior, which donated everything except for paint and painting.
"I think we received about 65 entries and it was very, very difficult but I think we picked a very deserving lady," said Passionate Home owner Carrie Thackuk.
So the family was contacted and the work was done over a few days, with the family kept from seeing the final result until Monday afternoon.
"I feel insanely lucky," Hayley said last Friday morning, as painters Mark McCandless and Darrell Hicks from All Bright Painting worked upstairs, giving her master bedroom upstairs a new splash of calming blue.
McCandless and Hicks offered their painting services pro bono for the project.
Benjamin Moore Langley Paint & Decorating Services donated two gallons of high-quality paint as well as tools for the project.
When they walked into their newly renovated and decorated bedroom Monday afternoon, Hayley's and Mike's eyes were as wide as their smiles.
"The room went from 'blah' to 'awesome!'" Mike exclaimed.
"It's absolutely amazing," Hayley said. "The furniture is gorgeous, totally unique. It's beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I love everything. I'm not going to leave this room for the next two weeks!"
