The '50s are coming to the Tri-Cities. The students of Broadway Bound Performing Arts Studio are presenting the musical Grease, from June 7 to 10 at the

Evergreen Cultural Centre. The majority of students in the production, aged 13 to 18, attend various schools throughout the Tri-Cities.

They have been working since September on the production, polishing their acting, singing and dancing skills for these performances.

Tickets are available at the Evergreen Cultural Centre box office.

LEGO COMPETITION INSPIRES

Baker Drive Elementary hosted its first LEGO Day Fair & Competition on April 28. More than 40 students from grades 1 through 5 entered their creations for judging.

The judging panel included Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart, Coquitlam RCMP Supt. Claude Wilcott, Coquitlam Fire Chief Tony Delmonico, Mike Schoenhals, director of LegoMation Camps, and Sock Wars author Hannah Christensen.

Entries included an underwater castle complete with an aquarium tank filled with water, a full-scale house and motor home with working pull-outs, a catapult, a home office, a fort, an electric company, a rocket launcher and a police station.

LITERACY TUTORING AVAILABLE

The Family Resource Centre, located at Minnekhada Middle School in Port Coquitlam, is offering a multi-sensory literacy-tutoring program during the month of July.

This program is designed to benefit children ages five through 14 who are struggling with literacy issues. Tutors are trained in Orton Gillingham and/or Singerland methods.

STUDENTS TALK IDEAS

The School District 43 Student Leadership Council is hosting TEDx Coquitlam event on May 29 at the Terry Fox Theatre.

The event will feature inspiring students from a variety of Coquitlam schools discussing a number of topics and sharing stories.

It is the first TED-affiliated event in the Tri-Cities.

The event runs from 8: 15 a.m. to noon at the theatre, 1260 Riverwood Gt.

TED is an international non-profit group devoted to fostering the spread of great ideas.

COQUITLAM SCHOOLS WIN AT GREEN GAMES

A pair of Coquitlam elementary schools took home high honours at the 2012 BC Green Games.

Roy Stibbs Elementary finished in the top 10 in the elementary school category for its Top 10 Countdown video, while the Dirty Hands Club at Harbour View Elementary was given the viewer's choice award for its video "Just Playing in the Dirt."

The BC Green Games encourage students from kindergarten through Grade 12 to document and share their environmental action stories on topics such as energy conservation, transportation, schoolyard greening, recycling, composting and community stewardship.

Science World manages the BC Green Games with input from youth, government, school district, university, science and environmental education community partners.

STUDENTS INVITED TO APPLY FOR OTTAWA YOUTH FORUM

Encounters With Canada, a youth program, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Students can apply to spend a week in Ottawa attending Canada's largest youth forum for a cost of $675.

The round trip to Ottawa includes all ground transportation, room and board at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre, guest speakers, workshops and program excursions. Exchanges Canada, part of the federal Department of Canadian Heritage, subsidizes the airfare.

Students whose families are members of Canadian Parents for French (CPF) are encouraged to apply to the group for a $100 bursary to further reduce the cost.

Applicants must be between 14 and 17 and complete the program before turning 18. They must also be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, able to miss a week of school, respectful of the French language and good ambassadors for the school, district and community.

LOCAL TEEN WINS PAGEANT

The Coquitlam Italian community has a new queen.

Sabrina Miniaci was named Miss Calabria 2012 at a pageant earlier this month.

The Grade 11 Heritage Woods Secondary student beat out four other contestants to claim the crown.

The Miss Calabria pageant is held every year at the Italian Cultural Centre.

This year was the 20th anniversary, which drew 600 guests from around the Lower Mainland.

Contestants had to be from the Reggio Calabria region/province in southern Italy.

In her biography, Miniaci said after graduation she would like to attend a university to further a career in the performing arts and from there go to Broadway, or become a pop singer and a TV/film actor.
