Headlines Theatre is bringing the show Us and Them (the inquiry) to the Langley United Church on Oct. 29 and wants the audience members to be part of the show.
Us and Them is about "othering," or creating divisions between people based on reasons such as race, gender, economic status, appearance, etc.
Because the audience is involved in this participatory theatre production, no two performances are alike.
The show in Langley is a partnership between Headlines, the church on 200th Street at 53rd Avenue, and the Agricultural Workers Alliance. There are more than 20 shows around the region with Headlines partnering with groups ranging from an organization fighting substance abuse, a group that helps homosexual writers, First Nations groups, and members of Vancouver's Jewish and Palestinian communities.
The show is being staged in non-traditional spaces as well, everything from a person's home to a cafe. The Langley show starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation and people can make reservations by emailing rsvp@headlinestheatre.com or calling 604-871-0508.
Us and Them was the creation of David Diamond, long active in community-based theatre.
"We will be using theatre techniques and processes that create a safe space for audiences to share their own stories. The barrier between performer and audience breaks down; some audience members find themselves right in the centre of the performance as it unfolds. It's very exciting, and even transformative," says Diamond. "No one is forced to participate, and those who do tend to feel that it's because something about the issue raised resonates with them deeply."
Headlines Theatre was born in 1981, offering theatre on important topics such as homelessness, addition, mental health and housing affordability.
