Students at Gordon Greenwood Elementary had a special visitor - a lion - in their classes Jan. 26 as they learned about Lunar New Year.

This one had a massive papier mache head with a mouth that opens and a colourful fabric body.

The Grade 5, 6 and 7 students in the English Language Learners program taught fellow students about the New Year celebrations important to Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese cultures.

They also performed a lion dance with a large papier mache and fabric puppet, and showed ceremonial outfits from their cultures.

Sunjin Kim was one of the school's English Language Learners who stood in front of several classes to give the presentations.
Sam Lee carried the head of the lion, aided by Ted Lan.
Sunjin Kim and Anne Lan demonstrated different kinds of bows, a way to show respect.
Dressed in an ornate ceremonial outfit, Sunjin Kim showed a bow during presentations to fellow students.
The presentations gave the Grade 5, 6 and 7 students a chance to showcase ceremonial clothing, and cultural traditions. Anne Lan demonstrated a bow that culminates with the person touching the head and hands to the floor.
