The Rose Gellert Hall concert season kicks off on Oct. 27 with a performance by the publicly praised Italian ensemble Cappella Artemisia.
One of the concert series offered by the Langley Community Music School (LCMS), the Rose Gellert Hall performances are for music lovers interested in an evening of unique talent.
According to organizers, the opening show will not disappoint.
"Through their work, Cappella Artemisia has unearthed wonderful masterpieces that should be heard," said Elizabeth Bergmann, LCMS artistic director. "When I first heard a recording of this fantastic group and the exquisite music they are devoted to bringing to the stage, I knew that Cappella Artemisia would be some-thing that our audience would absolutely enjoy hearing."
The ensemble consists of six vocalists, two cornetto (curved wood wind instruments of the 16th and 17th century), and two continuo.
Their show will feature unique music written primarily in the forbidden environment of a convent.
"It was an early example of the women's movement, expressed through the power of music," said Candace Smith, Cappella Artemisia founder-director. "And of course, it also reveals these extraordinarily beautiful works, often written in secret, and in many cases now being heard for the first time since they were first created."
Organizers noted that the ensemble has received praise for its exceptional performances of distinct music they refer to "early music with a difference". The concert also includes commentary about the music and its meaning to the times in which it was created.
The series features four performances. The second will be the Canadian chamber musicians, the Gryphon Trio on Feb. 2. On April 13, the third event highlights 24-year-old Canadian pianist Avan Yu. The season closing performance will be the Vivace vocal ensemble on May 25.
Cappella Artemisia will play the Rose Gellert Hall Saturday, Oct. 27, at 7: 30 p.m.
