Concert raises funds for cancer survivor

Regional entertainers are donating their time and talents to help a young cancer patient.

Langley's Douglas Park Spirit Stage will serve as the site for a Saturday concert to raise money to help a child cancer survivor.

Jackie Maksymiw, a local nurse and singer, is organizing a fundraiser to help with the therapy and care for her eight-and-a-half-year-old niece Julia. At age three, Julia lost a leg to bone cancer and was treated a couple of years ago for lung cancer.

Last year's show organized by Maksymiw was called For the Love of a Child.

This year's show has been named Step by Step because the proceeds are to help with specialized physical therapy Julia needs as well as for a bike she can use.

"Again local Fraser Valley performers are volunteering their talents to the community of Langley," Maksymiw said.

"There will be a variety of music ranging from classical, contemporary, gospel, musical theatre and jazz as well as contemporary and modern ballet dance."

Entertainment runs 2-9 p.m. Admission is by donation.

"Join us for some wonderful entertainment for a great cause," she said.

Some chairs are available and Douglas Park has a few benches, but people are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or a blanket to be more comfortable.
