Seniors are invited to a lecture series that will focus on helping them protect their money.
Unfortunately there are many people who work to scam seniors out of their money, so Langley Lodge staff have organized a lecture series to arm seniors with information.
The Winter Public Education Series continues educational lectures started by the non-profit seniors complex care facility. The winter series runs January to April.
"The demand for local, accessible and free education on seniors health and wellness issues has been steady since we started the program in 2010," said Debra Hauptman, executive director of Langley Lodge. "We are delighted to host the series for Langley residents as a community service."
Education about aging is important for Langley residents who, along with the general population, are aging and comprise a growing seniors demographic in the region.
Guest speakers are experts and sessions are typically 60-90 minutes duration. Light refreshments are served, and most speakers provide printed information to take home. The lectures are on the third Tuesday of the month.
On Jan. 17 a financial planning advisor will speak on the subject of estate planning and general tax matters pertaining to estates and planned giving.
In February, the Public Trustee's Office will have information on financial and personal care management for adults.
In March, a tax accountant will provide information on seniors' tax credits and income/pension splitting, and in April, the BC Elder Advocacy group will present a module on fraud schemes and how to protect yourself from common scams targeting seniors.
All guest speakers are donating their time, to allow Langley Lodge to host the series for free to the general public, Hauptman noted.
All seniors have to to do take part is to register in advance so the lodge knows how many people are attending. The lectures start at 7 p.m. at the lodge, 5451 204th St.
