Biography

Anne Marrison began gardening at seven years old in England, learning from John Chapman, a retired neighbour, who was caring for her family's acre garden. He had previously been head gardener on a large estate.

Later, Anne gardened on a small lot in North Surrey, then three windowsills in East Kitsilano, then a tiny lot in west Kitsilano before moving to seven acres in South Surrey where she raised children and chickens and tended fruit trees, berries, shrubs, flowers and grew most of the family's herbs and vegetables.

At that time, she joined the Alpine Garden Club of BC and the Royal Horticultural Society.

Anne's 27-year Newspaper career included editing and reporting, including two years at the daily Columbian newspaper.

For 24 years she has been writing a weekly garden column for eight Can-West newspapers. For 11 years she has written features for Gardens West. Anne now gardens in Maple Ridge.

"We have a 15-year-old mature camellia plant with healthy leaves. It gets lots of sun but its blossoms are not opening up fully like they used to. How can we get it blossoming fully?"
