A handful of friends and Legion members at the Aldergrove Branch started tossing around the idea of holding a car show to help the branch raise money.
It's now six years later and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 265 Car Show has become an established summertime destination for car buffs - be they owners or simply fans of seeing cared-for autos.
Last year more than 150 vehicles were there. The organizers have adapted the site so even more autos can be put on display Aug. 14.
"It's open to everything," said Laura Cline, one of a half dozen volunteer coodinators.
Rick and Laura Cline have been helping to organize it since the beginning and people can expect to see one of Rick's babies on display, a 1967 Beaumont two-door hardtop.
While it's called a car show, the Clines noted that it welcomes almost any motorized vehicle.
"We had a fire engine last year," Rick said.
The cost is $8 per vehicle and there are dash plaques for the first 100 vehicles registered.
The branch president gets to pick a favourite but all other prize categories are chosen by the public at this car show.
The other categories include people's choice car (first, second and third), as well as best truck, best engine, best motorcycle, and best under-restoration vehicle.
The band Front Page is performing classic rock and pop at the Legion all weekend and outside for the car show.
The barbecue gets turned on first thing in the morning and turned off when the show closes at 4 p.m. so different grub will be cooked up all day, depending on what time it is.
The branch is hoping that the car show is at least as successful as last year's.
"Last year we sold out of everything," Laura noted.
There are also door prizes for all ages and sexes, games, a beer garden and more.
An Aldergrove resident has donated a Ford F-150 shortbox with a matching canopy and a new windshield which will be auctioned to help raise funds for the branch.
The Clines explain that the show funds go to the branch for its various charity efforts.
The public is encouraged to attend, as there is no admission fee, and they have an important role in helping determine the award winners.
