A handful of falling trees is causing some safety concerns in a Burnaby business complex, after a vehicle was crushed this morning.
No one was injured, but the trees destroyed an SUV and crashed through the window of a nearby building on Fraserton Court, which is close to the Fraser River and not far from Boundary Road.
Wayne Carignan, of MVCC Video Communications, went out for a cigarette this morning around 8 a.m., when he narrowly escaped the falling trees.
"I was out having a smoke, and there was these large trees, and I noticed all these little branches hitting the ground, and I thought that was odd," he said. After about 10 minutes, he turned his back on the trees and started walking away when he heard a crack.
"There was these three trees coming straight at our office, so I ran to the right, and they missed me by about six, 10 feet. I'm a little shook up," he said. Two more trees fell into the river.
One of the trees crushed an SUV with enough force to pop the wheels. "You could hear them exploding," Carignan said, adding the carnage was impressive. "Our concern is there are two more really big ones," he said, adding he hopes they will also be taken down.
Carignan figures the trees fell because their roots are often sitting in water, close to the edge of the Fraser River.
In all, five trees fell, although two were attached at the trunk. Carignan estimated the trees were about two feet in diameter and 30 to 40 feet tall.
No one from the City of Burnaby was available for immediate comment, but watch this site for updates.
