SEVENTY YEARS AGO

August 8, 1940

Premier Duff Patullo announced that the appeal by 14 Langley teachers against their dismissal had been upheld by the Council of Public Instruction.

The reason the Langley School Board had given for firing them was that the teachers had made themselves "obnoxious to the taxpayers."

Langley Council took the first steps towards forming a civil defence league.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

August 10, 1950

Langley High School vice-principal Roy E. Mountain was appointed the district's Supervising Principal, to replace R.R. Bront who resigned a week before.

Hiring of five new teachers brought Langley's total teaching staff to 99.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

August 11, 1960

Langley sweltered in the highest temperatures on record. Aldergrove's weather station reached

97 degrees Fahrenheit (36.1C).

Council approved a $2,000 test well for the Aldergrove water system.

FORTY YEARS AGO

August 12, 1970

Housing starts hit a new high in July, reaching more than two per day, despite strikes, lock-outs, shortage of materials, and a depressed economy. Langley Township issued 40 permits for homes and three for duplexes, while the City authorized a dozen starts on homes plus four duplexes.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

August 13, 1980

With the consultants' report concluded, the two Langley councils and the school board were asked to consider Langley Secondary School as the site for a proposed indoor swimming pool and theatre complex.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

August 8, 1990

The annual re-enactment of the fur brigades to Fort Langley once again drew thousands of spectators to the historic community.

TEN YEARS AGO

August 8, 2000

Willoughby couple Gord and Joan Hill drove their 1930 Model A Ford to a car convention in Kansas City.

Unacceptable levels of bacteria in the municipal water system resulted in a "boil water" order for residents of the Tall Timbers area.

August 11, 2000

At 14 years of age, quick-draw shooter Nicole Franks of Aldergrove was the fastest gunslinger in the world. With her .45 calibre pistol, she outshot the defending world champion, a 40-year veteran of the sport.
