Organizers of the Langley Walk are on the hunt for history.
2012 is the 50th anniversary of the local non-competitive walk intended to encourage active lifestyles.
The organizers would like people to look through their keepsakes and items tucked away to see if they have crests from the previous walks.
The goal is to be able to assemble crests from all 50 years, but a few years are still needed.
Still needed are crests from 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1973, 1975, 1976 and 1977.
There should still be a lot of those crests hidden in bottom drawers, steamer trunks, and in shoeboxes in the back of closets around Langley.
Since the first walkers struck out to complete a challenge put out by Pete Swenson, the Parks and Recreation director of the Township of Langley at the time, thousands of individuals and families have completed the courses set through the City and Township.
In its early years, the walk could be upwards of 20 miles long (32.1 km) and might loop through several Langley communities, from Aldergrove to Fort Langley to the City, before it was over. Those who finished the walk in those years often spoke of blisters and exhaustion after a long trek. Modern walks have been trimmed in distance considerably, but the tradition continues, and walks take place rain or shine.
This year's walk is Sunday, May 6 and residents are being encouraged to take part in the milestone community event.
If you have one of these Langley Walk crests, contact Barb Anderson, event coordinator at banderson@tol.ca or 604-533-6012.
