Police believe the woman hit by a truck on 200th Street in Langley City Wednesday may have been on her way to pick up her child at school.

The 42-year-old woman was struck in the crosswalk at 200th Street and 53rd Avenue, at about 2:45 p.m., said Sgt. Ravi Pawar of the Langley RCMP.

The woman was apparently walking east in the crosswalk, when a large 2005 Dodge Ram heavy duty four-door pickup made a left turn south onto 200th Street, striking her.

The woman was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, and was suffering from head injuries, Pawar said.

Later that evening she was listed in critical but stable condition.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene, and has not been charged, but Pawar said it is far too early in the investigation to say what, if any, charges will be laid.

A pair of white sneakers was visible near the rear of the truck while officers worked to map out the collision.

Police are still working to find out if the woman was on her way to school to meet her child. Many parents and children use that crosswalk every day to get to Nicomekl Elementary.

Members of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services (ICARS) were working with Langley RCMP to go over the scene in detail through most of the afternoon.

The police kept 200th Street closed from Michaud Crescent to Grade Crescent, blocking off parts of several other nearby intersections to keep traffic clear of the scene. Traffic was diverted to nearby routes such as 203rd Street, causing traffic jams through the evening rush hour.
