While the 2010 Cruise-In isn’t happening, there’s still another car event set to roar through Langley streets next weekend.

The fourth annual Langley Speedway Reunion is set for Sept. 11 and 12, with the main show happening Saturday at the old speedway site in Campbell Valley Regional Park.

Langley Speedway hasn’t actually been used for races since the mid-1980s, but in its heyday Langley’s oval track was one of the most famous in the region.

Following it’s demise, the Langley Speedway Historical Society (LSHS) was formed as a registered, non-profit society, dedicated to the preservation and restoration of Langley Speedway.

A few years ago now, the society decided to coordinate an event in conjunction with the Langley Good Times Cruise-In, which brought upwards of 100,000 car enthusiasts to town for one weekend a year.

Since the Cruise-In isn’t taking place this year, the society has amended its annual events to host the main show on Saturday, instead of Sunday, explained society president Murray Jones.

Organizers say when and if the Cruise-In returns, the society will revert back to its old schedule.

In the meantime, for the fourth annual reunion, organizers expect a number of classic, custom, and vintage car owners to arrive in town on Friday. A camping area has been set up near the speedway for Friday and Saturday.

Gates open at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with participating vehicles being allowed into the speedway. All vehicles will be parked around the infield.

Throughout the day, there will be music and special performances, including Langley’s own sister act Robyn and Ryleigh Gillespie.

“Enjoy the company of fellow race enthusiasts and fans, then in the afternoon, follow the racing crowd to Agassiz as drivers and crews make their way there to compete, including the visiting OTRA teams, which are representative of the first cars to race at Langley Speedway,” LSHS organizers explain on their website.

Sunday has traditionally been the main day of events, but this year it’s being referred to as “the day after,” where campers and friends are welcome to mill about, walk the trails in the park, and leave at their leisure, organizers said.

“Please refrain from doing burnouts, doughnuts, brakestands, or revving your engines while travelling to or from the speedway,” they emphasize on the schedule web page for the reunion.

“We have worked hard to foster this relationship with the park, and won’t tolerate these actions!”
