Canadian border guards working at the Aldergrove crossing nabbed a large load of smuggled wine, hidden under a sleepy dog.

On July 30, a returning Canadian resident coming through the crossing from Lynden claimed to be returning with $15 worth of U.S. merchandise.

He was pulled over for a secondary examination of his vehicle.

The officers cleared off the back bench seats of the man’s pickup truck, which were covered with blankets, containers, a dog bed, and a dog.

Under the fold-up seats, they found six five-litre bags of white wine.

The cardboard wine boxes were found in the back storage bed of the truck.

The man was apparently attempting to evade paying the $135 in extra duty on the wine. It was seized and destroyed, according to the Canada Border Services Agency.

The day before the wine incident, guards at the same crossing turned away a family that said they were coming across to visit family in Surrey.

A background check revealed that the father had been previously deported from Canada, and he had not applied for the special permission required to visit the country.

He was given another deportation order, and his family went with him back to the United States.
