The Langley RCMP will close the eastbound lanes of the TransCanada Highway near Aldergrove today as crews clean up after a theft of wire.

Police expected a 10-minute closure of both eastbound lanes near 272nd Street starting between noon and 12:30 p.m.

After that, the right hand lane was expected to be reopened, with the left lane closed for another hour and a half as crews worked to repair damage.

Thieves damaged some Telus lines during an attempted theft, according to Cst. Darren Forsyth.

Initially, there was some fear that the lines posed a danger to motorists.

Wire theft has been fairly common for several years in Langley. In some cases, thieves have brought down utility poles in attempts to get at valuable copper wire.
