After a scorcher of a week, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley’s 23rd annual Golf for Kids Sake came in like a cool breeze.

A full contingent of golfers turned out at Newlands Golf and Country Club recently, to enjoy a day of good company, good cheer, and the chance to show support for a charity that impacts hundreds of children in the Langleys, explained Rebecca Mears.

“Golf was a leisurely day filled with exciting side-contests on the course and plenty of goodies from supporting sponsors,” said Mears, the manager of program services for the local Big agency.

“At the end of the day, the tired and happy golfers settled inside the ballroom for cocktails and a fabulous buffet dinner.”

A Big Sister, who began as a teen in-school mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley, shared her experiences with everyone, “moving hearts deeply,” Mears said.

A few golfers went above and beyond in recruiting support from colleagues and business partners, providing an array prizes and items for the silent and live auctions.

Among the prizes were two free tickets anywhere WestJet flies.

“I think the highlight of the night was the live auction where a magnum of Gran Marnier (donated by Mrs. Dorothy McCleery, John Pybus’s mother) raised $1,800 as it was sold and donated back three times,” said Tim Lounsbury, chair of the golf tourney and former board member.

The organization was also grateful to the many volunteers who turned out to help make the event run smoothly, helping net an estimated $40,000 for the charity, Lounsbury added.

The tournament is one of the major annual fundraisers for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley.
